We've been publishing our rankings by major via USA Today since June of 2014. We've seen a tremendous interest in our rankings by major. Much more so than our other types of rankings. Why is there such an interest in majors?
Where the Real Game Will be Won and Lost
The word is getting out, and students are realizing that their choice of major can have a great and long-lasting effect on their lives. A student's choice of major has a greater effect on their future salary and job prospects than the college they went to. And among colleges offering the same major, the outcomes can vary widely. Consider this example of an English major.
Where do you think students will decide to study? With the right data in their hands the choice is obvious.
Rankings by Major
College Factual rankings by major are focused on outcomes. Some of the data points we consider include early career and mid-career salaries, graduation rates, and student loan default rates.
We also consider how popular the major is overall and within the school, as well as whether the major is within a "power cluster" (supported by other, similar majors giving students broad and deep learning options).
